Portraits of Young Frankenstein Stars
t’s been almost 40 years since Mel Brook’s “Young Frankenstein” burst on the screen and became an instant comedy classic. It is considered by many to be one of, if not the greatest American comedy ever made. And it is as fresh today as it was “way back when”. Made for a little under three million dollars, it is also one of the most profitable comedies every made. One reason the film worked so well, was the “slash and burn” technique of Mel Brooks and co-writer/actor Gene Wilder. The movie was released at a comedy length of 106 minutes, but the original release was almost twice as long and from all accounts was not at all funny. But after as Brooks called it: “a comedy-day massacre”, they trimmed out the fat, and a classic was born. And forever more the sight of Gene Wilder (Dr. Frankenstein, or is it “Fronkensteen”!), Peter Boyle (the Monster), and Marty Feldman (Igor), brings instant smiles to our faces, and their trademark lines rush through our brains with delightful glee. Who can forget Igor getting the wrong brain to put in the monster by thinking the jar says: “Abby Normal” (or his trademark: “What hump”?) , or Frankenstein’s “Put the candle back”, and of course “It’s alive!!!!!”, not to mention the Monster singing: “’Uttin’ on the iiiiiiiiitzzzz!”. To honor this beloved movie, legendary artist George Murray, Jr. has created a spectacular homage. A magnificent triad of almost photo-realistic pencil drawings of Wilder, Boyle and Feldman in their characters. Murray is famous for his celebrity portraits, and his work is sought after all over the world. He especially loved comedy, and is famous for his portraits of both Andy Griffith and Don Knotts (for many celebrities, including Andy Griffith, Murray is the only artist whose works are approved by them). This very limited edition pencil portrait lithograph is personally signed by the artist, and comes with a signed (by the artist) and numbered Certificate of Authenticity. It is a true joy that beams with “Young Frankenstein” laughter. Professionally framed in glass and double mounted. (approx 17x15)
