Revd John Brackenbury was an Anglican clergyman who lived between 1816 and 1895, married three times and had seventeen children. At Cambridge he had only gained a third-class degree, but as a schoolmaster he proved first class. He helped to found Marlborough College, then in 1849 went into partnership with Mr Mayer, who was running a small Military Academy in the High Street, Wimbledon. This was Nelson House School, founded in Eagle House by Revd Thomas Lancaster in 1790 and named after the famous Admiral following a visit he and Lady Hamilton had made in 1803. Here Brackenbury proved so successful that numbers began to outgrow the existing buildings. So in 1860 he bought two large meadows below the Ridgway from Mrs Phillips for a new and much larger school. Inevitably the architect was Samuel Teulon. The buildings he designed, above all the school hall and family rooms overlooking the valley, were generally considered his finest work in Wimbledon.
For the next twenty years the school went from strength to strength. It mainly prepared older boys from fifteen to eighteen for entry into the Royal Military Academies at Woolwich and Sandhurst. By 1871 there were 91 "scholars" there, taught by Brackenbury and five assistant masters (among them ten years later was a future composer, then known as Edward German Jones).
