Jan Wyck (or Wijk) was a native of Haarlem who travelled to England with his father Thomas in the early 1670's. He joined the Painter-Stainer's Company in June 1674 and established a studio in Covent Garden. Wyck travelled extensively throughout England and Scotland and detailed sketches of the environs of London, Bristol and Oxford exist. These drawings were used as a basis for the paintings of elegant hunting parties and staghunts for which Wyck achieved great fame and success. George Vertue wrote ``His Hunting Pieces are also in grate Esteem among our Country-Gentry for whom he often drew Horses and Dogs by the Life" (see, The Note-books of George Vertue, The Walpole Soc., vol. XX, p. 141). John Wootton was a pupil of Jan Wyck and it is paintings such as the present work that demonstrate what an important influence Wyck had on sporting and landscape painting in 18th century England.
