<td width="100%">
Portrait of an elegant lady wearing a blue silk gown with lace cuffs typical of the day. Beautiful detail of pearl and lace detail on her bodice. The artist Tilly Kettle was born in London in 1735. He studied at Shipley's, St Martin's Lane and 3rd Duke of Richmond Academies. He was working professionally by 1760 and his portraits owe much to Reynolds. He was greatly encouraged by Sir Richard Kaye who gave him introductions to many clients in the Midlands. Kettle established a successful practice in London in 1764-9. He then left of India where he met with success painting nabobs and native princes and also amassed a considerable fortune. He then returned to England and married the younger daughter of James Pain snr, the architect. His practice declined in 1776-83 and he fell into financial difficulties and became bankrupt. He died near Aleppo, while returning to India to recoup his fortune. A remarkably competent and sympathetic painter fond of placing his sitters with the light on a level with the face.
