The son of an Italian violinist, John Barbiroli was born in London.
He began playing the violin when he was four years old, but later switched to the cello. At the age of ten he entered Trinity College of Music and between 1912 and 1916 attended the Royal Academy, where he established himself as an orchestral and solo cellist. He later turned to conducting, taking seasons at Covent Garden and Saddler's Wells.
In 1936, in succession to Arturo Toscanni, Barbiroli became the conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Sir John's subsequent appointments include Manchester's Halle Orchestra (1943-68), the Houston Symphony in Texas (1961-1967) and the
Berlin Philharmonic (1961-1970).
