Frederic Harrison, 1831-1923, author and positivist, was born at 17 Euston Square, London, 18 October 1831, the eldest son of Frederick Harrison, of Threadneedle Street, by his wife, Jane, only daughter of Alexander Brice, of Belfast. His father, a prosperous London merchant who came of Leicestershire yeoman stock, went to live, shortly after his son's birth, at Muswell Hill, and afterwards moved to Oxford Square, Paddington, and then to Lancaster Gate. His country house was Sutton Place, Guildford.

Under the auspices of Harrison, who was president of the English Positivist Committee from 1880 to 1905, the positivist society led an active religious life, but in his later years the stress which came to be laid upon the sacerdotal side of positivism to some extent alienated his sympathy. It cannot be said that at the end of his life these questions possessed much general interest. The Review came to an end about the time that he died, and a few years later hardly any trace of the movement remained. As a religion positivism never met with wide acceptance, while as a system of social ethics its part had been played. The daring theories of its early days were the commonplaces of twentieth-century politics, and the practical effect given to many of them had created new problems to deal with which other organizations were required.Harrison influenced the life and thought of his time, less by his activity as a missionary of positivism, than by his vigour as a man of practical purpose. ...
