Portrait of Bindo Altoviti , After Raphael
Offered in this lot is "Portrait of Bindo Altoviti" after Raphael, Oil on Canvas. The portrait is stretched and framed. The famous "Portrait of Bindo Altoviti" is a painting completed around 1515, by the Italian famous High Renaissance painter Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, better known as Raphael. It is held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The graceful, almost effeminate position of the subject along with the heavy contrast between light and shadow are atypical of Raphael's work, particularly of his portraits of men which demonstrates the artist's experimentation with different styles and forms in his later Roman period. Many consider 16th century High Renaissance art to be largely dominated by three individuals: Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo da Vinci. Raphael was enormously productive, running an unusually large workshop and, despite his early death at 37, leaving a large body of work. Many of his works are found in the Vatican Palace, where the frescoed Raphael Rooms were the central and the largest work of his career. The best known work is The School of Athens in the Vatican Stanza della Segnatura. This oil painting is in good overall condition, very slight crazing noted, beautiful gold gilt ornate hardwood frame professionally mounted, scuffing noted to frame edges. Visible art measures 10.5"W x 13.5"L, frame is 17.5"W x 20.5"L x 2"D.*
