Louise Germain of France is appreciated for her pastoral paintings. She was trained by Bildecombe, who taught her a very realistic view of nature and more particularly the animal form. Married to German artist Eugene and the mother of two children, she lived a middle-class life in the center of Aix-en-Provence, which was surely unfavorable to her artistic aspirations.

At the age of twenty-five Germain met artist Joseph Ravaisou, which caused everything to change. They shared the same workshop, the same models and often the same ideas. She was the only female artist that Cerzanne accepted, sharing meals with him and Ravaisou under the pines and olive trees. In 1900, Germain and Ravaisou visited the World Fair in Paris where they were exposed to impressionism, which changed their way of painting.

In many of her paintings, Germain interpreted the drudgery of the working woman?s life. She campaigned against traditional women?s roles and the strong individuals that did not allow women to expand their options.

Later, when Ravaisou became sick, Germain was at his bedside until his death. She was so saddened that she practically gave up painting. In 1938, she left Dry Monument where she had lived since 1912. She died on October 13, 1939 in Aix-en-Provence, in her apartment on Littẻra Street.
