<B>Portland, ME</B></I> - $1 Original Fr. 380 <B>The Canal NB</B></I> Ch. # 941<BR> While this was Portland's second largest issuer of large notes, early examples from here are virtually non-existent, with the census showing just one First Charter (a lower grade Lazy Deuce) and one Brown Back, which is graded as "Fair." This piece comes from a most unusual source, a small cash hoard from northern New England consisting of mostly US and Canadian $1 and $2 bills from the 1860's through the early 1880's.
