Portable Pantry
Known as old camp wagon pantry or chuck wagon pantries, but primarily the “Portable Pantry.” Painted tin portable pantry made by “Globe.” Enameled black overall, with decorative patterns of birds and text stenciled in gold. The base is divided into six cubbies. Oval top has two doors, one with a beveled mirror, covering a rack for six tin canisters. The lids of the canisters are stenciled with the names of spices. Bottom door opens to reveal a divided compartment. The top’s sides are large bins. The right bin is fitted with a coffee grinder. Portable pantries were used to store dry foodstuffs on chuck wagons during the cattle drive era. Pantries could also be found on the wagons of large ranches. The two half-round tins on top could store flour, sugar, or coffee; spices were stored in canisters in the center section; and pans and other cooking implements could be stored in the base. The lettering on the bottom doors is just barely visible. This country store cabinet is 36” tall by 27” wide and 16” deep. There are angle brackets on the back for wall mounting.
