This flask-shaped 7.75” brown-glass bottle was produced in a two-piece mold as indicated by the single continuous mold seam down one shoulder of the bottle, across the base and up the other side to the lip. The lip was then applied separately. The paper label reads: “Superior Old Port Wine. For Medicinal Use. Gleaves & Averill, Druggists, California Street, Redding, Cal.” This bottle is probably unique. J.M. Gleaves and G.W. Averill were partners in their drug store at least by 1881 when they were listed in the “History and Business Directory of Shasta County,” by B.F. Frank and H.W. Chappell. In 1883, their business was destroyed by fire on 18 October: “A fire broke out at a quarter after 7 to-night in the sheds back of Frank Miller`s warehouse, destroying Gleaves & Averill`s store, J. M. Estes` tin shop, Frank Miller`s warehouse, Geo. Grove`s sleeping-rooms. The firemen and citizens worked with heroism….Gleaves & Averill, and Estes sustained a total loss.” [Ref: Sacramento Daily Union, Volume 18, Number 50, 19 October 1883, p. 2]. - Ken & Rosemary Roberts Collection -59483
