Popo Iskandar's interest in the arts grew when he undertook a painting course at Keimin Bunka Shidoso, Bandung under the guidance of Barli Sasmitawainata and Hendra Gunawan in 1943. His artistic career began as a poster painter for the Information Service of Indonesian Students Armed Force (TRIP) in 1945. He was then enrolled at the Bandung Institute of Technology, Department of Fine Arts and graduated in 1958.

Aside from his role as a lecturer at the State Teachers Training College in Bandung, Popo was also a highly regarded scholar and art critic. His bold, graphic works usually feature stylized animal forms with vivid colors. In the 1960s, he created his signature collection of artworks on topic of cats that reflect on not only the physical attributes but the spiritual understanding of the animal.
Popo received numerous accolades during his lifetime and was awarded life membership by the Jakarta Academy for shows held outside of Indonesia, namely in China, Japan, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and United States of America. An exhibition titled Popo Iskandar’s Expressions in collaboration with Griya Seni Popo Iskandar was held at Curate, Seni Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur in 2014 to celebrate the artist’s decades of creative oeuvre.

The winning bidder agrees to pay a buyers premium of 33.5% on the hammer price, Icollector 3% commission and 3.15% card charge for using debit or credit cards. On the invoice the Icollector commission and card charge will be listed together.

2. The auctioneer will be the final judge as to who is the successful bidder. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer shall at his discretion decide whether or not to reopen the bidding. If an item is withdrawn from auction it will be offered again at the auctioneers discretion. Title to all merchandise shall pass to the successful bidder at the fall of the auctioneers hammer. The purchaser shall assume full responsibility for the lot purchased once title has passed. All lots in the catalogue are subject to a reserve, of which the amount is private between Kristen Leighs auctions limited and the consigner. We reserve the right to bid up to the amount of reserve by placing successive or consecutive bids for a lot, or bid in response to other bidders.
POSTAGE:
3.The auction house has at any time the right to void the sale before any lots are shipped and will refund all monies paid within a reasonable amount of time normally within 2 weeks
3a. Invoices will be sent to the winning bidder within 5 days (for postage) of the close of the auction. And payment is due within 3 days of the invoice being sent.
SHIPPING.
A shipping quote is provided by Kristen Leighs auctions limited on invoices and automatically includes tracking, which can be tracked on your end to your address. Insurance isn't included and can be added at an extra cost by contacting us.
4. In bidding on any lot offered, the bidder indicates acceptance of these terms and conditions. Title of each lot passes when the auctioneer or screen indicates sold. The bidder is responsible for knowing on which item he/she is bidding. If unsure the bidder should inquire or not bid. When becoming the winning bidder at auction, you have affected a contract and will be expected to pay for items in which you were evidenced to be the successful bidder.
All autographed lots will include a third party certificate of authenticity. A certificate of authenticity is an opinion expressed by a company as to it being genuine. We welcome all bidders to do their own research before bidding, and to ask questions before bidding as the winner of a lot will enter into a legally binding contract to pay for the lot. As in condition of a lot, we give no opinions, and items are sold as seen.
