Born Barnaba Niccolò Maria Luigi Chiaramonti in 1742, he served as Pope from 1800 until his death in 1823; he was taken prisoner and transported to France in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars, remaining there until 1814 when, after the French were defeated, he was permitted to return to Rome, where he was greeted warmly as a hero and defender of the faith. Manuscript DS, in Italian, signed “Pius PP. VII,” one page both sides, 8 x 11.5, June 3, 1820. Letter to Francis IV, Duke of Modena, informing him that he has given to the Bishop of Modena full power in order to resolve all problems between the Church and the Duchy, signed at the conclusion as Pope. In fine condition, with writing showing through from opposing sides.
