Born Barnaba Niccolò Maria Luigi Chiaramonti in 1742, he served as Pope from 1800 until his death in 1823; he was taken prisoner and transported to France in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars, remaining there until 1814. After the French were defeated, he was permitted to return to Rome, where he was greeted warmly as a hero and defender of the faith. LS in Latin, signed “Pius PP VII,” one page, 7.75 x 9.5, January 13, 1819. Letter sending a greeting and apostolic benediction, in part (translated): "We send a Greeting and an Apostolic Benediction to our Dear Daughter. We have received your generous offices and are most certain of the sincerity of the prayers you are saying for Our preservation. Let us not neglect to express to you Our every Gratitude, while with paternal affection we extend to you and to your entire Family Our paternal Apostolic Benediction." In fine condition.
