Pope Paul III Manuscript Document Signed as Pope. One page with docketing on verso, 11" x 16.5", 1537. Born Alessandro Farnese (1468-1549), Paul was Pope from 1534 to his death. He was one of the few Popes to have fathered children before his election. Known as the Pope who started the Counter Reformation movement, he called the Council of Trent in 1545 to meet the crisis of the Protestant Reformation. Paul also patronized the newly founded Jesuits, the great agents of the Counter Reformation. His interest in art was very great: he had Michelangelo continue the decoration of the Sistine Chapel, and rebuilt and repaved many streets in Rome.
