Italian Pope (1881–1963), born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, who ascended the papal throne in 1958 and served until his death. As the guiding force behind the historic Second Vatican Council, John ushered in the most sweeping reforms the Catholic Church had undergone in centuries. ALS in French, signed “Ange. Jos. card. Roncalli, Patriarcha de Ven.,” one page, 6 x 7.5, February 14, 1953. A brief thank-you letter upon his being named Cardinal and Patriarch of Venice, penned inside a card printed with a corresponding message in French, in part (translated): “I sincerely thank everyone who has sent their congratulations for this double nomination, and wholeheartedly wish you the wealth of all the blessings of the earth and sky.” In fine condition.
