Pope Innocent X Letter Signed
Pope Innocent X Letter Signed as Cardinal Pamphili just months before his accession. One page with integral address leaf, 8" x 10.75", 1644. Born Giambattista Pamphili (1574-1655), Innocent was Pope from 1644 to 1655. After the death of Urban VIII, the conclave for the election of a successor was long and stormy, lasting from August 9 to September 15, 1644. The French faction objected to the Spanish candidate, but found Pamphili an acceptable compromise. Innocent, a lawyer by training, was one of the most politically shrewd pontiffs of the era, who much increased the temporal power of the Vatican. Waterstains at the bottom, folds, and tears. Overall good condition with a clear, bold signature.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
