Manuscript Letter Signed by Pope Gregory XVI Secretarially scribed LS “Gregory PP.XVI”, one page, 8.25” x 11”, Vatican City, March 30, 1838, to the Royal Duke of Modena, Italy, regarding the dispensation of funds. In part: "Upon reflection on your comments, we hereby request the funds be given to the Chapter to pass to the Bishop, and we would be pleased if they were given by the Superintendent Canon, not, however as a Deputy of the latter but upon our special authorization. To this end we intend to grant everything to the above mentioned Canon, which granting must be mentioned in the document. Trusting fully in your Highness, we are convinced this will be done... Having this faith, we requested that Monsignor Regianni not postpone his consecration, and upon our insistence, he consecrated last Sunday... We have... ordered that all necessary steps be taken... so that he may easily take care of everything upon his return to Modena. In the anticipation of the good outcome of our requests and of Your Highness' best intentions, we send our most heartfelt apostolic blessing..." The letter reflects the somewhat autocratic approach that characterized the Pope's reign, and in part refers to the Vatican' approval of the funding for a new altar in Modena. The letter is very lightly and evenly toned, and was beautifully penned by one of the Pope's assistants. An English translation is included. Pope Gregory XVI (1831 - 1846) was an arch conservative in an age when Europe was rapidly modernizing. His reign is regarded by many as one that sealed the demise of the Vatican States. He did, however, issue a strong condemnation of the slave trade and his interest in art and learning led to some important advances in the humanities.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
