Pontiac, IL - $5 1875 Fr. 402 The NB of Pontiac Ch. # 2141 Black Charter NumberFormerly lot 299 of the October, 1984 Hickman & Oakes sale, where John recounted the story of this note as follows: "Punched "Bad" in eight places, with margin splits and tears. This note is none-the-less a great rarity and an important note. [After] Close examination of this note...we have determined that there is no legitimate reason for this note to have been rejected. Punches like the one used here were commonly used on counterfeits, which this note is definitely not. The Jan-Feb 1889 issue of Underwood's "Counterfeit Reporter" lists, among other stolen National Bank Notes...bank serial numbers 741 to 765 and Treasury numbers 252111 to 252135 on $5 notes of the NB of Pontiac, Illinois. As of that time the Comptroller of the Currency had not yet ruled that the banks were liable whether the notes were stolen or not. This probably accounts for the survival of [this] note....This note is not for the collector of pretty pieces of paper, but rather for someone who will value a unique artifact of our national banking system." John's observations of twenty years ago are just as valid today. Bid what this is worth to you. Good. From Hickman & Oakes in October of 1984.
