Pomo Coiled Treasure Basket
Pomo Coiled Treasure Basket
Circa 1910
Height 2 3/4 in. Length 8 1/2 in. Width 4 3/4 in.

The coiled boat shaped basket is decorated overall with a repetitive step pattern. In addition, the rim is decorated with clamshell disc beads and quail topknot feathers. Pendants of shell disc beads and abalone shell hang from the rim at various points. The boat shape is common amongst the Pomo but rarely seen elsewhere. These bowls could be used to hold personal treasures, given as a gift on important occasions, or used as payment. Larger examples were used to hold ceremonial objects. The Pomo basket weavers are renowned for their skills and this well shaped and balanced example is a testament to their abilities.

Provenance
Natalie Linn, Portland, Oregon.

Important notice
