Antique. Dated 1844. converted from flintlock to percussion. Lemuel Pomeroy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts was the grandson of Revolutionary War General Seth Pomeroy. He began manufacturing military muskets in 1808 and continued until the forge burned to the ground in 1846. Pomeroy had government contracts to produce up to 6000 Model 1840 muskets at a rate of 1000 per year. The lock plate is signed "L. POMEROY" beneath an eagle in the center Dated 1844 U.S.
