Lot of 3. Two contemporary political "notes," 1879 & 1880, about the US government freezing the price of gold, putting the country on a gold standard, at $20.67 per ounce. The period from 1879 to 1914 is known as the classical gold standard. During that time, the majority of countries adhered, in varying degrees, to gold. Plus an 183_ unused check from the National Bank in New York, which bears the most cumbersome safety devices ever invented. The 1830s were a time of great check forgery primarily by "raising" the amount written on a check. Those practices were almost eradicated in the 20th century with the advent of simpler and more effective safety devices.
