Police Comics #1 (Quality, 1941) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Off-white pages. Where would comics be without Plastic Man? Jack Cole's elastic crimefighter made his first appearance in this issue, which tells the origin story of how a onetime hood became the good guy we all know and love. Plas isn't the only well-known character who debuted here -- Phantom Lady makes her first appearance as well. Yes, she's the same character who later appeared in her own Fox Features title, though she's a bit more demure here than when Fox got hold of her. The issue also has an unsigned story by the late Will Eisner, featuring a reporter named Chic Carter, who becomes "The Sword" when trouble arises. The hero who was supposed to be the star of the book was Firebrand, who was drawn by Reed Crandall inside the comic and by Gill Fox on the cover. CGC notes, "One piece of tape on cover." Overstreet 2004 VG 4.0 value = $1,448; FN 6.0 value = $2,172. CGC census 1/05: 2 in 5.0, 3 higher.
