Two hardcover books signed by members of Robert Peary’s 1908-09 North Pole expedition: A Tenderfoot with Peary, first edition, first printing. NY: Frederick A. Stokes 1911, 5.5 x 8.25. Signed in fountain pen on the first free end page by the expedition’s youngest member, “With the compliments of George Borup.” Borup served as a scientist-photographer and accompanied Peary nearly to the Pole. He died at age 27, less than a year after the book was published, when his boat capsized on Long Island Sound; and Four Years in the White North, first edition. NY: Harper and Brothers, 1918, 6 x 9, signed and inscribed in fountain pen on the first free end page by Peary’s second-in-command, “With best wishes for Vassar, Donald MacMillan.” In very good condition, with toning to both signed pages, damp staining to edges of Borup’s page, as well as the inside pages, and light wear to covers and spine. Signed copies of this first popular account of Peary’s quest for the Pole are exceedingly scarce.
