Each color field has its own stencil cut from a thin sheet of metal or thick paper. The gouache paint is then applied using a brush. Pochoir is characterized by a remarkable depth of color. The pochoir technique was popular in France from the 1890's until the late 1930's when the downturn in the luxury market made this a labor and material intensive techique expensive. Especially popular in the art deco period, used for fashion plates amongst other things.
