Harold Cohn (1908-1982), was a successful painter, printmaker and teacher working both in Detroit and New Jersey. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the country including, The Detroit Institute of Arts (1933-45), The Carnegie Institute (1941&43), The Los Angeles Museum of Art (1945), The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1934), and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (1942). During his extensive career, Cohn explored many different elements of contemporary art. These influences can be seen in many of his drawings and paintings; much of his experimentation is thought to be reminiscent of Matisse?s art work. With such a striking comparison, it is no wonder that Cohn has such an extensive auction record.
?Plums and Glass? is an original ink painting from 1954, done by the prolific artist Harold Cohn. This very modern piece exhibits a glass and a bunch of plums sitting on a table, all done in a very minimalistic fashion consisting of black line. The lines vary greatly depending on whether they are thick or thin, streaked or splotchy, heavy or light. All of these different qualities create variations that are interesting and visually stimulating, making it a very powerful piece. There is a more modern approach in the way that this still life is handled spatially, for instance, the table is tilted up towards the viewer.
