<B>Original Lifetime Playboy Club Plaque Signed by Hugh Hefner w/Lifetime</B></I> <B><I>Playboy</B></I></B></I> <B>Subscription (c. 1960).</B></I> In the early years of Playboy, readers were encouraged to join the Lifetime Playboy Club, the primary benefit of which was a lifetime membership to Hugh Hefner's fledgling magazine. An extra benefit was that the membership could be transferred one time, either before or after the member's death. To the best of charter member John Basil's recollection, the membership "didn't cost much, and, after all, he had already offered Hef the outrageous sum of $5 for the first issue (see previous lot!), an issue he had missed when it hit the newsstands in limited numbers in late 1953.
