Wetstenium et Gul. Smith, 1734. Plate volume only. Folio [41 by 27 cm], contemporary full brown calf; spine with six raised bands, decorated and lettered in gilt. (32) pages; superbly engraved allegorical frontispiece; title printed in red and black, with a finely engraved vignette; engraved headpiece and initials; 184 well-engraved plates of ancient coins. Binding much the worse for wear, especially at spine; two spine panels lacking, with additional wear. Contents very good or better. Andre Morell (1646-1705) was employed by Louis XIV as Keeper of the Royal Coin Cabinet. Not only was he an accomplished Swiss numismatist and engraver, he was also an exceptionally gifted scholar and designer. He set himself the impossible task of cataloging and engraving all ancient coins in the principal European cabinets. Only the plate volume is present here, though the engravings are finely executed and of considerable interest. Brunet 29810. Hirsch 88. Lipsius 267.
