Woodward, W. Elliot. CATALOGUE OF JOHN E. BURTON’S COLLECTION OF AMERICAN AND FOREIGN COINS AND MEDALS, ANCIENT COINS, COIN SALE CATALOGUES AND FRACTIONAL CURRENCY. New York: Bangs, Oct. 26-28, 1881. 8vo, original printed wraps. 78, (2) pages; 2034 lots; 2 heliotype plates. Printed on thick paper. Hand-priced in ink. Spine separating at signatures. Very good or so, with fine plates. A scarce sale, with plates depicting exquisite large cents (the entirety of Plate I) and important early U.S. silver coinage and patterns (Plate II). Plate II also depicts a “1650” Pine Tree Shilling that Woodward accepted as legitimate. Pages 61-62 of American Numismatics before the Civil War, by Q. David Bowers, include some very interesting information on Burton (1847-1930), who had been involved with the hobby since the 1850s. Adams 42 (rated A for large cents and early silver, A- overall). Davis 1166.
