Plains Rawhide & Wood Whirling Drum Mid 1900s
For your consideration is this Native American Plains Indian rawhide and wood whirling drum circa mid 1900s. Historically, hand drums have been an essential part of spiritual ceremonies for vision, power celebrations and healing. These unusual drums are played by holding the stick between your hands and whirling the drum back and forth. The drums have small wood pieces connected to strings attached to the sides of the drum. As you whirl, the wood pieces strike the rawhide head, creating a resonant, percussive sound. This piece shows good condition overall with little wear present and no signs of major damage noted. It measures 12" L x 3 1/2" W x 7/8" D and weighs under 6 ounces.
