Plains Indian Parfleche Ceremonial Rattle 1950s
For your consideration is this Plains Indians parfleche ceremonial rattle, circa 1950s. The rattle shows a wonderful construction of parfleche hide with a red piece of trade cloth wrapped around the handle of the rattle. Two turkey feathers adorn the piece and are held on by raw hide strips. The bottom of the handle features strips of raw hide. The rattle portion has been painted with a blue base and features red triangles painted throughout. Attached to the very bottom is a rawhide piece reading, "Plains Indian Rawhide Dance Rattle Trade Cloth / The Horse (Shoe?) Collection". The condition of this ceremonial rattle is good, with no obvious signs of damage; there is wear consistent with the age of the rattle. The rattle measures 12 1/2" L (18" L including raw hide strips) x 3 1/8" W x 2" D and weighs under 6 ounces.*
