This is a wonderful early Plains Native American Indian spontoon pipe tomahawk from the mid to late 19th century. The exceptional piece features a Revolutionary War (1775-1783) Colonial American style Spontoon blade constructed of brass of a French European influence design. Pipe tomahawks with a solid brass head are very scarce and were highly desired due to their unique color, even though they did not hold their edge like the iron head counterparts. One side of the blade shows a religious four bar cross with each bar showing three rounded tips (the cross is brass and is adhered to the blade. The war club tomahawk shows a wood haft showing various file branding burns along the entire piece and brass covered iron tacks adorning the blade attachment. The mouth piece also shows file burns. The end has a glass trade bead drop on sinew. The tomahawk is 21”L with an 11”L x 4 3/16”W x 1 15/16”D head. The bowl shows a ¾” opening and is 1 3/8” deep. Please review pictures thoroughly and rely on inspection for origin and age.
