Pittsburgh, PA - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 474 The Marine NB Ch. # (E)2237
This wonderful note made its first public appearance in our Central States Sale last year and we quote liberally from that catalog description: "This 1-B note is the only serial number 1 known on this bank and only the third known serial number 1 Brown Back for all of the Pittsburgh banks combined. George C. Burgwin was a prominent lawyer who appeared regularly before state and federal courts, including the US Supreme Court. In 1891 he also became a director of the Marine National Bank. This led to him becoming vice president in 1900 and president in 1903. He would stay at that post for over twenty years until his death on April 18, 1925. Along the way Mr. Burgwin was also involved in many civic, fraternal, and social organizations. This $5 is third-party graded PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ with the added comments of "exceptional paper quality, great embossing & color." We see that as certainly the case as this original note has been well preserved over the years. The inks are dark and the paper is white. The penned signatures of J.S. Brooks and George C. Burgwin look like they were laid down earlier today with ink from an ink well. The only thing that keeps this note from climbing higher on the grading scale is the thin bottom margin. This is still a true trophy note worthy of the finest collection."

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
