Pittsburgh, PA - $20 1902 Date Back Fr. 649a The Metropolitan NB Ch. # (E)2279
This is a truly rare Friedberg number with only a handful of examples reported. Unlike most of the rare numbers in Nationals, this one did not occur because of a change in title or a change in denominations which the bank elected to issue. This combination is rare because of a fluke in the issuing calendar, which affected only banks chartered between March 24, 1915 (when the Teehee-Burke duo assumed office together) and June 30, 1915 (the date that the Aldrich-Vreeland Act expired and all banks switched to 1902 Plain Backs) or banks which switched from 1882 Date Backs to 1902 Date Backs during that period. Only a very few banks fell into either category, and only a very few $20 1902 Date Backs were issued bearing these signatures. Type Notes have long been collected by signature combination, but collecting Nationals in this manner is still in its infancy. In a few years, we suspect that price levels for truly rare National signature combinations will be measured in multiples of what they are today. Very Good-Fine.
From The Thomas M.
