c1905 - This clever candlestick measures 12" long and is shaped like a pistol, complete with a grip handle and front sight. The thumb lever on the holder is curved downward like a trigger. The side of the stem is stamped CM, which likely indicates the maker of this stick. This candlestick hails from Bisbee. Mining areas throughout the West would hold Drill Contests (see our fabulous Ingersoll Ad lot for an example) on Independence Day. Single and Double Jack Drilling methods were used to create blastholes in rock by the use of hammer and hand-held steel. Single Jack drilling involved one miner, while two or three men participated in Double Jack drilling. One miner would hold the steel, and one or two others would strike with hammers. Reports of the 1905 Double-Jack Drilling contest indicate that, in addition to cash prizes, the winners were given a miner`s candlestick crafted by a local Bisbee blacksmith. The Pistol Grip candlesticks were displayed for many years in a bar in Brewery Gulch. When the bar finally closed, the sticks were purchased by a long time employee of Phelps Dodge, who lived in Bisbee for more than 20 years [Ref: Ted Bobrink]. This candlestick is a great item to add to your mining and western collections, and is in excellent condition. -62205
