Pioneer Medical Text - with Southern Association. Surgical Observations on the constitutional origin and treatment of local diseases; and on aneurisms, by John Abernethy. The very scarce first edition of this historically important work in the annals of medicine. London: 1809. Full calf, 292 pp. Reprinted in the twentieth century as part of Classics of Surgery Library. "A pupil of John Hunter, Abernethy became a leading surgeon in London. His book was, in the view of D'Arcy Power, epoch-making. In the first edition on pp. 234-292 [found thusly in this copy], is recorded the first successful ligation of the external iliac artery for aneurysm, an operation carried out by Abernethy in 1796."--Garrison and Morton. Abernethy considered this his most important book, referring to it as "My Book"; he quoted it so often in his lectures that he was caricatured in the popular press as "Dr. My Book." Contemporary signatures on front flyleaf and title page of Theodore Gourdin, M.D., Charlestown, So(uth) Carolina. BM Readex, vol. 1, p. 58; Waller 168 (9th ed.); Wellcome II, p.3; Garrison and Morton 5584; Heirs of Hippocrates 1193. Foxing at forward portion of book, small leather fragment lacking at spine, scuffing, else very satisfactory, and internally generally bright and fine.
