Incorporated in 1871. Cert. #4471 issued in 1876 to W.S. Downs for 100 shares. Signed by Frank Smith, secretary and C.S. Weller, president. Vignette of seated allegorical figure at bottom right. Slight staining at folds with small tears at center. On Feb. 20, 1869, Mrs. S.E.C. (Carmichael) Williamson wrote in a letter read at the organization meeting of the Ely Mining District:
'Gentlemen-With many thanks for the compliment allowing me to suggest a name for your city, I offer for your consideration "Pioche." Most respectfully, S.E.C. Williamson." Between 1870 and 1872, Pioche (with the exception of Virginia City) was the most active town in Nevada [REF: Davis, The History of Nevada, 2009, p. 930].
