Pioche,NV - Lincoln County - 1872 - Vista of One of Nevada's Early Mining Towns Photograph :
Early photograph of an isolated rough and tumble mining town. Photograph measures 12”x9 ¾”, black single matte 12”x10 ¾”, medium contrast—tends toward the blacks, and focus is good. Bakery can be easily read on one of the small buildings in the foreground. No photographer identified. Silver was discovered near Pioche, 1863-64. At that time Pioche was extremely remote. In 1868 the town began to boom and peaked in the 1870s. During the silver crisis of 1893, the town slowed, but revived in 1907. The remote location of Pioche made for a lawless community in its early days. Ore wagons hauled ore to Palisade, 275 miles to the north, where the Central Pacific Railroad was connected in 1868 (Paher). The view in this photograph looks north north west to where the ore wagons would have headed in 1872. In 1873, the Pioche & Bullionville Railroad was completed, which provided a more efficient means of transport during the early years of Pioche mining. Pioche was a very successful mining community and the town remains active today. During its early successes in the early 1870s, Pioche was one of the most lawless places in Nevada. Its remote location kept an organized enforcement agency from being established. This photograph documents that period.
