Original Film Used background layout drawing created for the production of Walt Disney's Pinocchio. The drawing depicts Gepetto's Workshop as seen by Jiminy Cricket. These interior backgrounds were drawn by Disney Legend Claude Coats and inspired by the old world styling of Gustaf Tenggren. 12 1/2" by 15 1/2". I have inserted a snapshot from the movie showing the drawing after it was colored and altered for film. The mate to this drawing sold in Van Eaton Galleries, May 15 2022 for a record price of $13,310. Provenance: The Estate of Peter Fortsas Claude Dixon Coats (1913 - 1992) was active/lived in California. Claude Coats is known for Town-landscape, genre, buildings, mural. Born in San Francisco, CA on Jan. 17, 1913. Coats was raised in Los Angeles. At USC he studied with Paul Sample and Dan Lutz. Upon graduation in 1934, he studied at the Chouinard Art Institute under Millard Sheets. He then worked at Disney Studios as a background painter and sketch artist for many years. During the 1930s he painted watercolors of old buildings, alleys, and circuses; after 1945 he began to use other media. Coats lived in Los Angeles until his demise on Jan. 9, 1992. Exh: Calif.
