Last Horse was a performer in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. This photo was given by him to Princess Chinquilla, she is featured in the photo sitting next to Last Horse's Wife Saddle. Back side of photo has another image, that of Chief Yellow Shirt. 2 1/2" by 4 3/8". Samuel Last Horse belonged to an important Kiyaksa band family. According to the 1890 Census he was 41 years old, born c. 1848-49. His wife Saddle (age 31) and their two daughters, Red feet and Kills wood (both age 8 - twins?) lived in the same household. Also resident with them was a son, also baptized as Samuel and age 20. Thomas Edison’s Black Maria Studios in West Orange, New Jersey is said to be America’s first movie studio. In 1894 one of the earliest films of Native Americans was shot there. The silent 16 second black and white film, called Buffalo Dance, features three Sioux warriors in full war paint and war costumes performing for the camera. The warriors, Hair Coat, Parts His Hair and Last Horse, are accompanied by two unidentified drummers; all are veterans of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
