Pima/ Papago Rattlesnake Lidded Basket c. 1890's
Featured in this lot is this Pima or Papago Indian woven lidded basket circa 1890's. The basket features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that shows a beautifully decorated side walling of the basket that is considered the "Rattlesnake" pattern that shows polychrome coloration of natural to black natural dyes and shows expert weaving to the frame fo the basket and the lid of the basket as well. The "rattlesnake" pattern, often featured in Pima (Akimel O'odham) and Tohono O'odham (Papago) basketry, is a stylized design representing a snake's movement or anatomy, frequently spiraling outwards from the center of a tray or wrapping around its sides. While some Pima basketry designs are simple geometrical shapes passed down from the Hohokam culture, the rattlesnake motif is one that carries specific symbolic meaning related to reverence, protection, and the spiritual world of the desert. The condition of this lidded basket is well preserved with some slight patina adorning the woven basket consistent with the age of the piece but otherwise shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this lidded basket is 3 3/4" x 6 7/8" x 6 7/8". The collective weight of this basket is 6oz.
