ALS in French, signed “Renoir,” one page on a 5 x 3 postcard, postmarked December 5, 1897. Letter to Julie Manet, the daughter of Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot and her husband Eugene Manet, asking to change the day of a planned meeting because his son Pierre is going out and he is thus unable to see her. Also addressed on the reverse by Renoir. Scattered creases and a light block of toning from previous display, otherwise fine condition. Renoir and Morisot had a close relationship, and she and daughter Julie often posed for the artist. Julie was nineteen at the time of this letter and had been orphaned three years earlier with the death of her mother; the family’s circle of Impressionist friends helped her during this time of need, with Renoir and her uncle Edouard Manet providing the greatest support. A wonderful association piece.
