This lithograph in colors from 1983 shows on a light beige ground abstract drawings appearing calligraphic. A red broken line frames the composition and gives a charming accent color.

The lithograph in colors from 1983 is signed and dated lower right in ink ‘Alechinsky 19 / 8 1993’ and once again signed and dated on the stone ‘Alechinsky 1983’. The sheet is laminated on a supporting cardboard and insignificantly toned. The condition is good. The frame shows slight signs of wear. The image measures 28.8 x 42 cm, the sheet 31.3 x 42.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 55 x 64.8 cm.

Pierre Alechinsky (b. 1927)

As a Russian-Jewish immigrant, Pierre Alechinsky grew up in Brussels, where he also studied book illustration and typography at the School of Architecture and Applied Arts. In 1949, he became a member of the artist group CoBrA. Here he was mainly responsible for the production of the magazine CoBrA. In 1951, he moved to Paris, where he learned etching by S.W. Hayter. Three years later, he met Walasse Ting and through him his great interest in Chinese painting techniques was awakened. In 1955, he even produced a movie in Japan about the traditional calligraphy of the country. He took part in two documentas and represented Brussels at the Venice Biennale in 1972. He is a Knight of the Legion of Honor of France and an honorary doctorate of the University of Brussels. (fea)
