Pierre Alechinsky (b. 1927)

As a Russian-Jewish immigrant, Pierre Alechinsky grew up in Brussels, where he also studied book illustration and typography at the School of Architecture and Applied Arts. In 1949, he became a member of the artist group CoBrA. Here he was mainly responsible for the production of the magazine CoBrA. In 1951, he moved to Paris, where he learned etching by S.W. Hayter. Three years later, he met Walasse Ting and through him his great interest in Chinese painting techniques was awakened. In 1955, he even produced a movie in Japan about the traditional calligraphy of the country. He took part in two documentas and represented Brussels at the Venice Biennale in 1972.
