Phyllis of the Follies (Universal, 1928). Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14"). Nepotism can take a bow for the production of this light comedy and bubbly lobby card set. Carl Laemmle, the founder of Universal Pictures, tapped his nephew, Ernst Laemmle, to direct this backstage picture about a Broadway dancer and the unintended wackiness that erupts from an innocent practical joke. As a favor to friend Mrs. Dexter, Broadway dancer Phyllis Sherwood (Alice Day) agrees to assume her identity in order to fool a conquistador of married women (Matt Moore) who has decided upon Mrs. Dexter -- whom he's never met -- as his target. Suprisingly, humorous complications ensue. These cards display all of the mistaken romance, admonitions at unwelcome advances, the gasps and stunned-saucer eyes in vivid, effervescent color. The title card has browned a bit but the cards show no such affect, except for the occasional thin, light line along an edge. Very Fine+.
