Photos and Ephemera Relating to Carmel Mission.
A group of 21 photographs depicting or related to Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, together with numerous typescripts/copies of notes and correspondence associated with the Friends of Carmel Mission restoration, musical programs at the Mission, and other miscellaneous related ephemera (c. 1940s and later). The photographs range in size from 7in x 5in to 14in x 11in; one is signed by Mary McCloskey (the matte 20in x 16in). Some notes are in the hand of Elsie Whitaker Martinez ("Pellie"), who, along with Harriet Dean ("Pal"), was involved with the restoration effort. In her oral history, San Francisco Bay Area Writers and Artists (Bancroft Library 1962-1969:246), Elsie explained:  "We were baptized in Carmel Mission in 1939. Then, after we'd moved to Carmel, Harriet and I became interested in helping the restoration. Our work was to do all the publicity and we were secretaries to Father O'Connell who was running the restoration campaign. During the war, money was very hard to get, so we were eager beavers in running campaigns for funds for the missions. We did a great deal of writing for them and did all the publicity." From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
