Hanger holes at top, slight edge damage at bottom. In period frame from Cottle’s home. Red Tomahawk had participated in most of the heated Indian Wars of the 1880s, but gained notoriety in 1890 when, as an Indian Police Sergeant, he shot and killed Sitting Bull, whose Lakota Sioux tribe had defeated Custer at Little Big Horn in 1876. Red Tomahawk visited Washington in 1929, and though he didn't speak a word of English, became something of a celebrity.
