Title: Naked Man Being a Woman, NYC, 1968
Artist: Diane Arbus (American, New York 1923 - 1971 New York)
This photograph was probably taken in Arbus’s subject’s bedroom, but the curtains framing the shot make it appear like a theatre set and the man stands centre stage as he were ready to begin his performance. As he is a ‘naked man being a woman’, he is indeed playing a role. He stands self-consciously yet provocatively, his hip pushed forward in a showgirl’s pose, the lines of his body highlighted by Arbus’s flash. Some writers have noticed that his feet are placed like Venus in Botticelli’s painting The Birth of Venus (about 1482–86) in which the goddess emerges from the sea as a woman, covering her nakedness with her long hair. Standing in front of Arbus’s camera, his face caked in make-up and his expression distant, the man here is also emerging as a woman, but he makes no attempt to hide his naked body from scrutiny.

2. The auctioneer will be the final judge as to who is the successful bidder. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer shall at his discretion decide whether or not to reopen the bidding. If an item is withdrawn from auction it will be offered again at the auctioneers discretion. Title to all merchandise shall pass to the successful bidder at the fall of the auctioneers hammer. The purchaser shall assume full responsibility for the lot purchased once title has passed. All lots in the catalogue are subject to a reserve, of which the amount is confidental between Kristen Leighs auctions ltd and the consigner. We reserve the right to bid up to the amount of reserve by placing successive or consecutive bids for a lot, or bid in response to other bidders.
POSTAGE:
3.The auction house has at any time the right to void the sale before any lots are shipped and will refund all monies paid within a reasonable amount of time normally within 2 weeks

4. In bidding on any lot offered, the bidder indicates acceptance of these terms and conditions. Title of each lot passes when the auctioneer or screen indicates sold. The bidder is responsible for knowing on which item he/she is bidding. If unsure the bidder should inquire or not bid. When becoming the winning bidder at auction, you have affected a contract and will be expected to pay for items in which you were evidenced to be the successful bidder.
All autographed lots will include a third party certificate of authenticity. A certificate of authenticity is an opinion expressed by a company as to it being genuine.
