9.5" x 7.5" albumen print mounted on larger purple board with imprint of Johnston, Rock Springs, Wyoming and identified in pencil on verso, c. 1885. Possibly taken in the aftermath of the Rock Springs Riot of 1885, this image shows a cavalry troop on the parade grounds before a stone building, with stables to the left. The location of this post is unknown.

On September 2, 1885 white miners, believing Chinese laborers were driving down local wages in the local coal mines, marched on the Chinese section of Rock Springs. In the aftermath, 30 Chinese lay dead, with scores of their buildings burned in what remains the worst incident of anti-Chinese violence in the 19th century United States. Federal troops were called in to restore order, and remained in Rock Springs until 1899 at the start of the Spanish American War.
