Photo of 73 Veterans of Irish Rebellion
Group Photograph of 73 Veterans of The Irish War of Independence, including Éamon de Valera. The photograph is 11.25" x 9.25" and nicely mounted (18.5" x 17" overall). The men are wearing the 1919 - 1921 War of Independence Medal and the 1916 Rising Medal. Both medals were authorized in 1941. The Irish War of Independence Service Medal was issued to members of the old-Irish Republican Army, the Irish Citizens Army, Fianna Eireann and the Cumann na mBann, which was the women's branch of the Old-IRA. Men with actual active and armed service such as the famous flying column's were issued with this medal with the additional 'Comrac' bar. Both versions are also known as the 'Black and Tan' medal. The 1916 Rising medal was presented to participants deemed to have taken part in the Rising in Dublin on Easter Monday 1916 and to members of Cumann na mBann who attended the casualties. This photo appears to include the surviving senior leaders of the Irish Rebellion. de Valera (1882 -1975) was one of the dominant political figures in 20th century Ireland. He served in public office from 1917 to 1973, holding the various Irish prime ministerial and presidential offices. A significant leader of Ireland's struggle for independence from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in the early 20th century, and the Republican anti-Treaty opposition in the ensuing Irish Civil War, de Valera was the author of Ireland's constitution.
